What is nacre? Nacre is a pearly fluid found inside pearl-producing mollusks, like oysters and mussels, that is deposited onto the surface of an irritant (usually a parasite) inside the mollusk shell. Over time, this self-defensive mechanism forms a pearl. Mother of pearl, which lines the shells of pearl-producing mollusks, is actually built-up layers of hardened nacre.
