Made in Western Germany prior to 1975, probably much older, these reverse carved picture stones are miniature works of art. However, they are now old and slightly fragile with some wear due to age. Known historically as crystal paintings, each of these glass crystal stones is hand pressed with a table polished and faceted edge top through which you can see a detailed intaglio image, molded into the back of the stone. The intaglio carving of a victorian woman's silouette was then painted black, the surrounding surface was cut to remove excess color and the back was then painted with a white color.
